What goes in

AC Installation in Hampton

AC installation in Hampton puts new central air into residential and commercial buildings, sized to the building before anything else is decided.

The indoor and outdoor parts are built as a matched set, which is why a new system replaces them together rather than pairing new equipment with old.

Outside
The condenser, set level on its own pad beside the house
Inside
The evaporator coil, on the furnace or air handler in the closet, garage or attic
Between
The insulated line set, plus the "condensate drain" that carries off the water the coil pulls from the air
On the wall
The thermostat that tells the whole system when to run

Getting the size right

Sized to the Home by a Load Calculation

A "Manual J load calculation" measures insulation, windows, air leaks and duct condition to size the new air conditioner. It is the trade's standard method, published as ACCA Manual J, and it replaces the old habit of matching whatever unit was there before.

  • Too big

    Cold, then clammy

It chills the rooms fast and shuts off before it has wrung the moisture out, so the house feels damp. The trade calls that start-and-stop pattern "short cycling", and it wears parts early.

  • What we size for Matched to the house

    Long, steady runs

It runs long enough on a hot afternoon to pull the humidity down as well as the temperature, then rests. Rooms stay even and the bill follows the weather, not the equipment.

  • Too small

    Never catches up

On the hottest days it runs without a break and the thermostat still reads high by late afternoon, while the outdoor unit works harder than it was built to.

Start to finish

How an AC Installation Runs

An installation runs from a site check and load calculation through a written quote, the install, thermostat setup and a full test cycle.

Refrigerant is handled only by certified technicians, as the U.S. EPA requires of anyone who opens a cooling system.

  1. We look the place overWhere the outdoor pad goes, where the coil sits, the ducts and the electrical panel, and the room-by-room numbers the sizing needs.
  2. You get the price on paperEquipment, labor and any duct changes added up in writing, before anything is ordered or any work starts.
  3. Set, connect and sealThe condenser goes on a level pad, the coil goes on the indoor unit, and the line set and drain are joined and sealed.
  4. Controls on the wallThe thermostat is wired to the new equipment and set up with you, so you know how to run it from day to day.
  5. Run it, check it, clean upThe system cools the house through a whole cycle while airflow and drainage are checked, and the site is swept before we go.

Before the install

Ducts and Wiring Checked First

The ducts and the size of the old system are checked before a new unit goes in, and any circuit upgrade is the electrician's work.

A new air conditioner can only move air the ductwork lets through. Measuring "static pressure" shows whether the runs are choking the airflow, and the old unit's size tells us what the house has been living with, which the load calculation then confirms or corrects.

  • Crushed, kinked or loose flex duct in the attic or crawlspace
  • A return large enough for the air the new system has to move
  • A level spot for the outdoor pad, clear of shrubs and the dryer vent

What it costs

What Sets the Price

Every installation is priced to the house, so the number comes from the walk-through, not a list. These are the things that move it.

  • CapacityThe size the load calculation calls for.
  • EfficiencyHigher-efficiency equipment costs more up front and less to run.
  • DuctworkWhether the runs can be used as they are or need repair or resizing.
  • ElectricalA new or larger circuit, done by a licensed electrician.
  • AccessHow hard it is to reach the closet, garage or attic where the indoor unit sits.
