Furnace Repair for Norfolk Homes

In Ghent and Colonial Place, plenty of houses have outlived the furnace they were built with, and an older house is worth planning around before its heat turns into a repair. We find the fault, quote the whole job before we start and test the heat before we leave.

The estimate is free and carries no obligation.

How a repair goes

Furnace Repair Close to Home

Residential and commercial furnace repair here runs in the same order as every job we take: we inspect the furnace, price the repair up front, fix it and test it.

An older house changes what we find inside the cabinet, not the order we work in, so you know what comes next from the moment you call.

When we pick up

Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm

Calls outside those hours go to voicemail, and we return them the next working morning.

  1. Inspect

We go over the whole furnace: the burners or heating elements, the "flame sensor", the "limit switch" that shuts the furnace off when it overheats, the "blower motor" and its "run capacitor", the "control board", the filter and the venting.

  2. Price it up front

You hear what failed in plain words and get the price for the whole job before any work starts, with nothing added after.

  3. Repair

We repair or replace the part that failed, on the day we said we would be there, and leave the closet, garage or attic as clean as we found it.

  4. Test

The furnace runs a full heat cycle while we watch it light, warm the house and shut down the way it should, and only then do we pack up.

The houses here

Local Homes and Their Heating Needs

The city counts 102,542 housing units, and only 45.7% of the occupied ones are lived in by their owners, so plenty of furnaces here heat a rented house rather than an owned home.

Much of that housing is older than the equipment inside it. From Berkley to the streets around the Chrysler Museum of Art, a newer furnace often sits in a closet or garage laid out for an older unit, with ductwork under the floor that has been patched or rerouted over the years and a flue that may no longer suit the furnace on it. We check those connections along with the fault you called about, and tell you what is worth fixing now and what can wait.

Before the cold

Winter Weather a Furnace Faces Here

A furnace here sits idle through the long warm months and is then asked to run hard when a cold snap arrives, which is when a weak part gives itself away.

  • Damp in the cabinet

Humid summers leave moisture and dust where they do harm: on the burners, the "ignitor" and the "flame sensor" that has to prove the flame before the gas stays on.

  • Backup heat running long

A heat pump leans on its "auxiliary heat strips" in the coldest stretches, and strips that run for hours point to a heat pump that is falling behind.

  • Starts that cut out

A furnace that lights, runs a few minutes and shuts down is "short cycling", and the cause is worth finding before a cold night rather than during it.

Heating and cooling

The Rest of the System

The call that brings us out for a furnace covers the cooling side of the house too.

  • Cooling

    AC Repair When Summer Peaks

Salt air off the water works on an outdoor condenser's coil and fins in neighborhoods like Ocean View and Willoughby Spit, so when an AC there falls behind in the heat, we check the coil for corrosion along with the "contactor" and the capacitor.

    HVAC Services Through the Year

In a city whose median home dates to 1964, the heating and the cooling in a house were often added at different times, so HVAC services here means keeping both on a schedule: the furnace before winter and the AC before summer.

HVAC Repair When Both Systems Struggle

When the heat is weak in winter and the cooling is weak in summer, the fault often sits in a part both share, such as the blower, the ducts, the control board or the thermostat. The city is about 9.1 miles from our shop, so the same visit covers both sides.
