Furnace Repair for Portsmouth Homes

Cradock and Park View are historic districts, and a house that old has rarely kept its original furnace, so we check how the furnace is vented and wired as well as the part that quit. You get the price for the whole job before we start.

The estimate is free, with no obligation to go ahead.

From the call to warm air

Furnace Repair Close to Home

Furnace repair for residential and commercial customers here follows the order every job of ours does: an inspection, an upfront price, the repair, then a test.

Start with a call

(757) 529-6312

Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm. After hours, leave a message and we call back the next working morning.

  1. We look it over

The cabinet comes open and we check the "hot surface igniter", the "pressure switch", the "inducer motor", the blower and the flue connection before we name the fault.

  2. You hear the price

We tell you in plain words what failed and what the whole job costs, and nothing starts until you say yes.

  3. We make the fix

The failed part is repaired or replaced on the day we agreed, and the closet, garage or attic is left as tidy as we found it.

  4. We prove the heat

We call for heat at the thermostat, feel warm air at the vents and stay until the furnace finishes its cycle and shuts itself off.

The houses here

Local Homes and Their Heating Needs

The median home in town was built in 1966, and whole streets of them sit inside historic districts, so most furnaces here heat a house far older than the furnace itself.

That changes where a repair can lead. A replacement furnace set into an older closet may share a flue with the water heater, pull its return air through a grille sized for the unit before it, and run on a circuit added years later. When we come out for the part that failed, we check those connections too and tell you which ones matter now.

Call from a house near the Naval Medical Center or from a street in Truxtun, and the visit runs the same way; what changes is what we find behind the closet door.

When the cold comes

Winter Weather a Furnace Faces Here

Cold mornings after months switched off are the hard part of a furnace's year here: it has to light cleanly, draw its exhaust up a cold flue and push warm air through ducts that sat in a damp crawlspace all summer.

  • A burning smell that stays

Dust burning off the burners at the start of the season fades within minutes; a smell that hangs on, or a smell of gas, is a reason to shut it off and call.

  • Clicks, but no flame

An igniter made of "silicon carbide" is brittle and cracks from heating and cooling, and a dirty "flame sensor" shuts the gas off moments after it lights.

  • It tries, then gives up

A weak draft up a cold flue, or a tired inducer, keeps the pressure switch from closing, and the furnace stops before it ever fires.

Heating and cooling

Cooling and the Whole System

The furnace is not the only thing we work on in these houses; the same number reaches us for the air conditioner, the ducts and the thermostat.

  • Older housing stock

    AC Repair When Summer Peaks

In houses as old as many here, central air came after the house did, so the condenser, the indoor coil and the ducts can be decades apart in age. When cooling falls behind at the height of summer, we test the "run capacitor" and the "contactor" before we blame the oldest part.

    HVAC Services Through the Year

A large share of the homes here are rented, and a rented house still needs its furnace checked before winter and its AC before summer. We work with the landlord or the tenant, whoever makes the call.

HVAC Repair When Both Systems Struggle

In a house with a furnace and central air, heat and cooling usually travel through the same blower, ducts and thermostat. When both run weak, the fault most often sits in a part they share, and we look there before anything else.
