ac service at a Hampton home

What it covers

AC Service in Hampton

AC service in Hampton keeps residential and commercial air conditioners clean and checked before the cooling season starts. It is maintenance rather than repair: the visit catches the packed coil, the slow drain or the tired part while the system still runs, not on the hot afternoon it quits.

A split system gets attention on both sides. Outside, the condenser holds the coil and the electrical parts that start the compressor; inside, the air handler holds the filter and the drain that carries away the water the cooling pulls out of the air.

On the checklist

What an AC Service Includes

An AC service cleans the coils, clears the condensate drain, checks refrigerant pressures and electrical parts, and changes the filter.

The visit runs through these five in order, outdoor unit to indoor unit:

  1. Coil cleaningDirt packed into the fins makes the system work harder for the same cool air, so the coil is rinsed through and bent fins are combed straight.
  2. Condensate drain clearingThe line is flushed so water leaves the pan instead of backing up toward a ceiling or a floor.
  3. Refrigerant pressure checkGauges on the service ports show whether the charge is right; a low reading points to a leak, and that repair gets its own quote.
  4. Capacitor and contactor testA meter reading tells a weak "run capacitor" from a worn "contactor", the parts that start and switch the outdoor unit, before either leaves you without cooling.
  5. Filter changeA clean filter goes in, and we note its size so you can keep spares on the shelf.

Timing

When to Book a Tune-Up

The air conditioner is best serviced in spring and the furnace in early fall, before each season starts.

September and October are also when furnace slots are easiest to get, ahead of the heating rush, and a spring AC visit beats the wait that comes with the summer heat.

Warranty

Tune-Ups and Your Warranty

Most manufacturers require proof of regular maintenance to honor the equipment warranty.

On a furnace that usually means a yearly tune-up on record. Skip it, and a part the warranty would have paid for can come back to you at full price.

Keep the paperwork from every visit with the equipment's own papers; it is what a manufacturer asks to see.

Before winter

Furnace Tune-Ups Before Winter

A furnace tune-up tests for carbon monoxide and gas leaks, inspects the heat exchanger and flue, and checks the filter that overheats a furnace when clogged.

The safety tests lead because a crack developing in the "heat exchanger" can otherwise go unnoticed. The filter is the cheap part to forget: running a furnace with it clogged brings overheating, damaged parts and higher heating bills.

Also on the trade's 17-point list

  • Burners cleaned of soot, since "dirty burners" cause a bang at startup
  • The "flame sensor" cleaned
  • The "gas valve" tested
  • The "blower motor" checked
  • The draft diverter inspected

How a visit goes

From the Call to a Clean Finish

  1. You callWe answer, or call you back the same working day, and set a time that suits you.
  2. We arriveWe show up when we say we will and start outside at the condenser.
  3. Service and reportYou hear what was cleaned, what was tested and what is wearing, in plain words.
  4. Clean finishPanels go back on, the hoses are coiled and the work area is swept before we leave.

What it costs

Priced by the systems you have

A tune-up is priced by how many systems the home or business has and whether the visit covers the cooling side, the heating side or both. A worn part the visit turns up is quoted on its own, the whole job, before any work starts.
